"Mary Katherine Gallagher, an orphan, living with her grandmother, becomes obsessed with achieving “superstardom” and having her first kiss.
At St. Monica’s Catholic high school, Mary dreams of kissing Sky Corrigan, the most popular boy in school, but her awkwardness brands her a social outcast. Caught kissing a tree, she is placed in special education.
A school talent show is announced with the chance to win a trip to Hollywood and be a movie extra. Mary’s grandmother reveals the true reason she will not let Mary perform – Mary’s parents were stomped to death during an Irish stepdance competition. Finally allowing her to perform, Mary's grandmother coaches her and a chorus line of her special education classmates.
The record player inadvertently speeds up, and Mary falls – echoing her parents’ fatal performance – but, encouraged by Jesus, she successfully leads her friends through their performance. Met with a standing ovation, Mary wins the talent show. Sky kisses her, but she rejects him, and kisses Slater. The film ends as Mary, now dating Slater, again kisses the tree."

The first things that stand out are the red vest and the plaid skirt - so make sure these are what are focused on. Make sure to get something comfortable and that fits well.
If shopping secondhand, look for a deep V-neck red tuxedo vest like this one from ThredUp.
If you're unable to find something locally
or secondhand, Amazon carries this vest for around $23.
Next is the plaid skirt. Remember, vintage is always better.
IMO, the exact pattern of the skirt isn't as important as it being darker with red being the prominent color. If you can find wool, kudos! That's a piece to add to your regular wardrobe, which should be the goal of getting pieces for your outfits that are not a single use item like most cheaply made costumes.
I love this skirt from ThredUp for exactly these reasons. Plus at $16, heck yeah!
If you're a sucker for details, it's missing the pleats, and yes, the pattern isn't quite right. But, like I said, the importance is in getting something that is recognizable, comfortable, and re-wearable.
I think this suits the bill.
Getting something new, this skirt from Amazon is super adorable. It has both the school girl vibe as well as a holiday color scheme. I'd totally pair this with a red sweater and have a perfect Christmas outfit. At around $18, its another great find that hits both the general Mary vibe and a great wardrobe addition. Also, did you know it has hidden shorts already underneath. HECK YEA!
Next, are the more subtitle details that, depending on budget, time and well... desire. These can be substituted out with something already from your closet, something that is in the general scheme or omitted.
The thing with this costume, is how you act while wearing it. I think how is pretty obvious...
Items yet to complete the outfit, from top down, are as follows:
On of my favorite peter pan collar hacks is this faux collar, that way you can take your standard white shirt and add the collar for this costume and later use the collar on any collarless shirt for a little zest to your daily attire.
Finally, if you live in an area like I do where the end of October can be quite chilly, add a knit pink sweater, great addition for kissing trees.
